Ghoulish Halloween Treats
By Lisa James, senior staff writer

Halloween is a fun time to try things you don't normally do, and dinnertime is a great time to surprise and/or shock your family with creepy fun foods. Below are a few family favorites from Mormonchic's Lisa James. These ideas have evolved from food they eat throughout the year. Worms & Beans are normally called Messy Moes. The hot dogs are cut in the normal way for regular meals. 'Tater Tombstones are usually cut in large wedges for home fries. You can use these recipes and create your own by turning the normal into CREEPY CUISINE!

WORMS AND BEANS
1 package of hot dogs, sliced lengthwise in long strips
2 - 15 oz cans of your favorite Pork & Beans
1 tsp. prepared mustard
1 Tbs. minced onion
1/3 cup ketchup
Dash of Tabasco sauce
1 package of hamburger buns

Combine the first 6 ingredients in a crock-pot or slow cooker. Cook on low for two to three hours. Serve 'worms and beans' on top of hamburger buns.

If Worms & Beans are to much for your picky eaters try-

MUMMY DOGS

1 package refrigerated breadstick dough
1 package hot dogs

Preheat oven to 350°F. Separate the breadstick dough; roll or stretch each piece to about 15 inches. Starting with one end, wrap one breadstick dough in a spiral around a hot dog. Do this to the remaining hot dogs. Place Mummy Dogs on a baking sheet that has been sprayed with non-stick cooking spray. Bake 18 to 20 minutes. Serve with your favorite condiments.

'TATER TOMBSTONES with Cheesy cobwebs
4 medium potatoes, cut into tombstone shapes slice the potato in half and then stand up with cut side down and slice.
1 Tbs. vegetable oil
2 cloves garlic, minced
Salt and pepper to taste
Shredded mozzarella cheese

Place the cut potatoes in a large bowl; cover with cold water. Let stand for about 15 minutes. Preheat oven to 425°F. Spray a baking sheet with non-stick cooking spray and set aside. Drain potatoes and pat dry with paper towels. Put drained, dried potatoes in a large bowl and sprinkle with vegetable oil. Add salt, pepper, toss well. Place the potatoes on prepared baking sheet. Bake potatoes for 20 minutes. Using a spatula, turn potatoes over and sprinkle with minced garlic. Bake another 20 minutes until potatoes are golden brown. Take potatoes out of the oven and sprinkle with shredded mozzarella cheese for a cobweb effect.

Serve standing up like tombstones.

GHOUL AID

1 package unsweetened Grape Kool-Aid
1 package unsweetened Orange Kool-Aid
2 cups sugar
3 quarts cold water
1 quart Ginger Ale

Mix all of the ingredients together in large punch bowl. For some extra fun, try freezing gummy worms and extra ginger ale in ice cube trays and serve with the Ghoul Aid.

BLOOD-RED BROWNIES

1 package Red Velvet cake mix (Duncan Hines)
1 4 serving package Instant Chocolate pudding mix
1 package chocolate chips

Preheat oven to 350°F. Mix pudding according to directions. Add dry cake mix to the prepared pudding. Mix until moist. Stir in chocolate chips. Pour batter into a greased 9x13 baking pan. Bake for 30-35 minutes. Serve with ice cream and cherry sauce if desired.

SPOOKY CUPCAKES

Turn everyday cupcakes into Spooktacular cupcakes with a little candy and food coloring.

Spider-

Start with a chocolate cupcake frosted with chocolate frosting. Sprinkle chocolate decorator sprinkles on top. Use shoelace licorice for legs. For the eyes, any color of M&M. I used the peanut M&Ms. Red and yellow look great for the eyes.

LJ Note: I could not find black shoelace licorice in my tiny town. I used the regular sized twisted licorice and cut each length into four pieces with my kitchen shears.

Witch-

Start with any kind of cupcake. Consider using light colored cake batter and tinting it with green or purple food coloring. Frost with green tinted frosting. With a little extra frosting attach the circus peanut candy to the cupcake for a nose. Place a tiny bit of frosting on the back of a mini M&M and place the mini on a regular size M&M for the eyes. Place on cupcake in appropriate spots. Using more of the minis, place on nose and cheek for warts. With shoelace licorice (or cut twisted licorice) apply hair. Add a gumdrop or regular M&M for the mouth.

Zombie-

Begin with any flavor/color cupcake. Tint frosting to a creepy color with food coloring. Use 4 gumdrops as hair; 2 red gumdrops for eyes. With a tube of decorator gel frosting add a squiggly mouth and two dots on the gumdrop eyes.

Monster-

This works best with a chocolate cupcake. Tint frosting a contrasting color - I used yellow. (You could use any pastel color.) Do not spread frosting all the way to the edges. Let some of the cupcake show around the edges. There should be some kind of wavy-ness to the frosting edges. Use mint Lifesavers or Mentos candies of the eyes. With a small amount of frosting attach mini M&Ms to the mint for a spookier eye. Using decorator gel frosting squiggle a mouth on. Add white gumdrops that have been sliced to look like fangs. Attach fangs to the mouth.

All of the above candies are only suggestions. Be creative and come up with your own monster design. Your kids will love to decorate them for school parties.
