Following the Word of Wisdom -

It's Good for Your Health

Did you know that the 10 leading causes of death in the United States (1996) are:

  • *Heart Disease
  • *Cancer
  • *Stroke
  • #Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
  • +Accidents
  • *Pheumonia/Influenza
  • *Diabetes
  • HIV/AIDS
  • +Suicide
  • +Chronic Liver Disease and Cirrhosis

*Causes of death in which diet plays a part

#Causes of death in which smoking plays a part

+Causes of death in which alcohol plays a part

Smoking, Drinking alcoholic and caffeinated beverages are all things that we as members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints are admonished not to partake of (D& C Section 89).  These substances other than causing complications leading to death can also be harmful to our health:

  • Caffeine lowers our metabolism making it harder to lose weight if we are not taking it on a regular basis.  It is also addictive and can be habit forming making it very difficult to function normally with out it.  Also coffee stains your teeth and unless you are drinking plain, black coffee you are getting a lot of calories that you don’t need.  One mocha latte will give you around 500 calories!
  • Alcohol is very fattening.  A 12-oz beer (1 can) has 150 calories or 110 calories for a light beer.  One 6-pack of regular beer would have 900 calories! (Half of a daily intake for some of us.)  One shot of hard alcohol is around 100-150 calories.    Wine coolers have more than 200 calories and mixed drinks, such as a pina colada, (6.8 oz can) has 525 calories. A Long Island Ice Tea has 6 shots of hard alcohol and coke making it well over 600 calories.  Also, all of these calories go right to your stomach making your waist-line disappear.
  • Smoking also lowers our metabolism making weight gain almost certain if you ever stop smoking.  Also, nicotine raises our bad cholesterol (LDL-C) and lowers our good cholesterol (HDL-C), increasing our risk for heart disease.  Smoking makes it difficult to get adequate exercise due to difficulty breathing, it’s also very addictive and smelly too.

The Prophet Joseph Smith received true revelation regarding the Words Of Wisdom.  The things that science has proven today, the Lord told his people many years ago.
