| April
means conference but what does conference mean
to you? Let me rephrase that, what can conference mean
to you? We at mormonchic.com wanted to make sure we get
the most out of general conference. Here are some ideas:
 |
Prepare
to Listen
Wear comfortable
(but not too comfortable) clothes, shoes, etc. If
you're not comfortable, you may not be able to focus
on what our leaders would have us learn. |
 |
Take Turns
with the Kids
If you've got
kids, then you've got distractions...even if you try
to keep them busy with activities (SEE OUR MOMMYCHIC
SECTION: Keeping Your Kids Reverent During Conference.
Why not have a trade-off with your husband. He's incharge
of the kids during the first session, you're in charge
during the second, and so on. That way, you know you
can get the most out of a couple of the sessions.
Either that way, or you can solicit the help of older
primary kids, or Young Men and Young Women to help
you keep your kids calm during conference. The
older kids will love the idea of keeping the younger
kids busy because it will keep them busy. |
 |
Take Notes
Studies prove
that if you take notes you are more apt to retain
the things you are hearing. There are many ways to
take notes:
outlines
pictures
spider notes:
ideas that link to each other
thoughts/quotes
I've had
a lot of success with keeping notes in my journal.
That way I will always know where they are. Your
journal is special, and your own conference notes
can be a special part of your own account. |
 |
Listen
for Key Points
Sometimes speakers
can get a little wordy--heck, we all can. Don't get
tied down with all the stories, descriptions, etc.
listen for true meaning. Ask yourself questions: "What
is the speaker really trying to say? How can this
information be applicable to me?" |
 |
Bring
Reinforcements
One thing my
mother always did for conference...bring candy. I
know, I know, it can be a distraction, but it can
also keep you awake and alert. Bring some of your
favorite candy to keep you attentive. Becareful,
though, not to bring messy candy or distracting "crunchy"
food. (One time in college, I sat by a girl eatting
a whopper and chips....very distracting and a bit
on the disrepectful side) My mom always had a rule:
We will bring candy to keep us awake, but we must
be discrete! Oh, and by the way, don't eat too
much. Sleepiness is brought on by large consumption
of food. |
 |
Get Adequate
Sleep
Enough said |
 |
Pray to
Have the Spirit
Heavenly Father
can help us learn what conference means for us. He
wants us to lsiten to his prophets and hear their/his
words. Because of this, he will help us feel the spirit
and gather the appliciable information for our lives. |

| 1. |
You and your
companion can have a dinner party and invite your
VTees. Make it a potluck and get your VTees to each
bring a side dish. You can make the main dish and your
companion can make a dessert. This is a fun way to
get to know each other and have fun. You can do it
with or without your spouses. |
| 2. |
Baskin-Robbins
Run. Everybody likes ice cream, right? So why not
make it a visiting teaching idea. You and your companion
can invite one or all of your VTees to an ice cream
parlor and eat and have a good chat. Sometimes all
your VTees need is an hour with fatting ice cream
and away from screaming kids! |
| 3. |
Service Project.
Get to know your sisters on the best possible terms--Serve
with them. Get involved in a project for the community
or in your ward. This will not only help you and your
sisters grow closer together, but you're also helping
others. |
| 4. |
Serve your
Sisters. Everyone is so busy these days. Instead of
taking away part of their day by having them stop
to talk to you, help them out with their responsibilites.
Clean their bathroom, wash their dishes, help them
cut up watermelon for a baby shower. Whatever you
can do to help them is key. |
| 5. |
Kidnap their
Children. No really. Sometimes even great parents
need a break---and a date! Offer to take your visiting
teachees kids so that they can spend some time together. |
| 6. |
Share your
talents. Maybe you're a great singer, dancer, butcher,
baker, candlestick maker? Offer to teach your visiting
teachees one of your talents. |
| 7. |
Make your
visiting teachees some "Happy Pills." (These are not
really pharmacetuals, but M&Ms. Pick out all of
the green M&Ms (or blue, or yellow, or...you get
the picture) and put them in a jar. Make a cute label
out of decorative paper that says "Happy Pills."
Tell your visiting teachees that you're prescribing
them some Happy Pills and they can have them anytime
they need them. (Hey, if anything else, it's just
another reason to have a sugar-rush M&M!) ***Be
careful who you give this to. Make sure the person
will see the humor in this. |
| 8. |
Make VT magnets.
Make sure your visiting teachees have all your contact
information, like your name, numbers, email, etc.
Make them a magnet with all the information on it.
Glue it to a piece of decorative scrapbook paper,
and then glue it to a piece of cardstock. Stick a
magnet on the back and there you have it--cute visiting
teaching magnets. |
