Holiday Shopping Online
By Heather Hales, associate editor

Over the last year or so, I have finally become brave enough to start buying online.

I have always been anti-new technology. It takes me a while to warm up to something new. At first I hated computers and thought typing was for dummies. Look at me now, I am designing web pages!!

I finally decided it was safe to shop on the web, and I love it! I am the kind of shopper who always heads straight for the back of stores, because that's where the clearance racks are. I have this nagging insecurity the sales people look at me with disgust in their eyes as I shamelessly head straight for the back of the store. With online shopping, I no longer have to worry about what sales people think of me! I can click on clearance without wondering if people think I am cheap.

I LOVE the anonymity of online shopping. In addition to not being ashamed of heading straight for clearance, I also love shopping without the hassle of getting dressed for it. I have a baby now, and it's a much bigger deal to get myself and him ready to go to the mall, not to mention that I would have to do this all between my son's feedings! Shopping is a royal pain these days, but with the Internet all of my favorite stores are in one place. Are you convinced that online shopping is the way to go? Good!

eBay Tips
You can literally find just about anything on eBay. eBay is an online auction. You bid on items and the highest bidder gets the goods. In order to bid, you must fill out a free registration.

The best time toplace a bid on an item is the last five minutes. If you're really fast, you can even wait till the last minute -- literally. Most items are bought at the last minute, that's just the way it works. If you bid earlier than that, you are simply driving the cost of the item higher than it might otherwise go.

There are many ways to pay for items on eBay. Some of the most perferred methods are cashier's check or an online payment such as PayPal. Make sure you read the instructions of the action to see what payment methods they will accept.

PayPal is an online payment method from the makers of eBay. All you do isregister with them and set up whether you want to pay using one of your credit cards or your checking account. If you want to make payments through your credit card then there is a $.20 fee and a percentage of every transaction fee. It's really nomonial, but you should know about these fees before you make a payment.

Security on the Internet

"Shopping online offers lots of benefits that you won't find shopping in a store or by mail. For example, the Internet is always open - seven days a week, 24 hours a day. And, bargains can be numerous online. Shopping on the Internet is no less safe than shopping in a store or by mail. Keep the following tips in mind to help ensure that your online shopping experience is a safe one.

Use a secure browser.
This is the software you use to navigate the Internet. Your browser should comply with industry security standards, such as Secure Sockets Layer (SSL). These standards scramble the purchase information you send over the Internet, helping to secure your transaction. Most computers come with a browser installed. You also can download some browsers for free over the Internet.

Shop with companies you know.
Anyone can set up shop online under almost any name. If you're not familiar with a merchant, ask for a paper catalog or brochure to get a better idea of their merchandise and services. Also, determine the company's refund and return policies before you place your order. These should be posted on the company's Web site.

Keep your password(s) private.
Be creative when you establish a password, and never give it to anyone. Avoid using a telephone number, birth date, or a portion of your Social Security number. Instead, use a combination of numbers, letters, and symbols.

Pay by credit or charge card.
If you pay by credit or charge card online, your transaction will be protected by the Fair Credit Billing Act. Under this law, consumers have the right to dispute charges under certain circumstances and temporarily withhold payment while the creditor is investigating them. In the event of unauthorized use of your credit or charge card, you are generally held liable only for the first $50 in charges. Some companies offer an online shopping guarantee that ensures you will not be held responsible for any unauthorized charges made online, and some cards may provide additional warranty, return and/or purchase protection benefits.

Keep a record.

Be sure to print a copy of your purchase order and confirmation number for your records. Also, you should know that the federal Mail/Telephone Order Merchandise Rule covers online orders. This means that unless states otherwise, merchandise must be delivered within 30 days; and if there are delays, the company must notify you.

Pay your bills online.
Some companies let you pay bills and check your account status online. Before you sign up for any service, evaluate how the company secures your financial and personal information. Many companies explain their security procedures on their Web site. If you don't see a security description, call or email the company and ask."
