The Wings
20. Drape fabric over the wing. (SEE FIGURE Q) Tuck in the inside
and staple to the wood frame.
21. Place a straight pin on the outer side of the wing to temporarily
secure the fabric. (SEE FIGURE R)
22. At the bottom of the wing, fold the fabric under neatly.
(SEE FIGURE S)
23. On the outside of the wing, start stapling on the side closest
to the back and work inward. (SEE FIGURE T) As you get to the
part of the wing that curves, remove the pin, and refold the pleats
using your fingers. Hold the pleats with one hand and staple with
the other. Continue around the curve and down the wing. (SEE FIGURE
U) Trim excess fabric 1/4 inch from the staples. (SEE FIGURE V)
24. Cut long strips of fabric about two inches wide. Place the
welting cord on top of the long strip and fold fabric over it.
Hot glue casing shut. (Yes, this is what the pros we talked to
did!)
25. Wrap the welting cord around the outside of the wing, stapling
as you go. (SEE FIGURE W)
26. Place the flexible strip jaw along the welting cord. Staple
it along the top edge so the jaw is wide open and the "teeth"
are on the bottom of the jaw strip. (SEE FIGURE X)
27. Place the fabric you cut out for the outside of the wing
on the wing. Close the jaw strip shut and prod the remaining fabric
into the jaw strip with an ice pick or other sharp object. (SEE
FIGURE Y)
28. Use the rubber mallet to further close the jaw shut. Repeat
for other wing.
