A Family Heritage Inspired Project
by Heather Hales, senior editor

My maternal Grandmother died almost 1 month to the day before I was born, she had been touring Europe with my Grandfather. Her death was a great shock to the whole family. My mother gave me her name, Lilet, as my middle name; a way of letting her be a part of my life. While I never knew my grandmother I have always felt close to her. Over the years I have heard many stories about her and my mother likes to tell me she thinks the two of us would have got along famously! I have many mementos that used to belong to my grandmother; her wedding ring, some baby items she purchased in anticipation of my birth & this recipe holder.

The story is that while living in Saudi Arabia in the late 1970's my grandmother served in the Relief Society and she taught sisters how to make this as a Homemaking project. It is constructed out of gingham, staples, braided yarn, a clothespin, paper cut out and an old pop can lid. Over the years it has stood the test of time, and has the stains to prove it! I decided it was high time I recreated this piece in a more updated fashion.

Need:
1/4 yd of Fabric
1- 3x5x.5 block of wood
2 yds of ribbon
1 clothes pin
craft paint & paintbrush
hot glue gun (or staple gun)

Step 1:
Use your craft paint and brush to paint your clothes pin. Depending on your color you may need to do more than one coat. Let it dry while you finish the rest of the project.

Step 2:
Wrap the fabric around the wood like you would a present. Cut off excess fabric to help the corners lay smooth. Secure the fabric with hot glue or staples.

Step 3
:
Cut out a design or object from your fabric (you can also use a paper applique). Secure the applique to the wrapped board with glue, be sure to align it to the right or the left.

Step 4:
Measure out a little more than 2 times the amount of ribbon needed to trim all 4 sides. Use the glue to tack down the ribbon on 3 sides. Tie the excess ribbon into a bow at the top of the recipe holder, this is how you will hang it from the wall.

Step 5:
Glue your clothes pin onto the recipe holder opposite your applique.

Hang it up and attach your favorite recipe! You will never have to hunt all over the kitchen for your recipe card again!

In honor of my grandmother Lilet, here are a few of her recipes that once hung from this recipe keeper.

1/4 cup butter
2 eggs
1/2 cup milk
1 1/2 cup flour

Hearty Beef Stew
4 strips of bacon cut into 1inch strips
2 tablespoons margarine
1 pound boneless lean chuck in 1 inch cubes

1 pound smoked ham in 1 inch strips
4 cups cabbage, coarsely shredded.

In skillet fry bacon until crisp. Drain bacon grease into a heavy sauce pan (set bacon aside) and add margarine and beef. Brown meat evenly on both sides. Add onion and apple. Cook until apple is tender. Add broth, water and salt. Cover pot and simmer until meat is tender (about 2 hours). #0 min. before the end of the cooking time add the carrots and ham. Ten minutes before the end of cooking add bacon and cabbage. Simmer until cabbage is done.
