old cereal box) or cardboard.
1 yard (or less) of colorful fabric (for cover---whatever fun
scraps you have will work)
STARTING
OFF:
Fold the pellum in half length-wise. This will give you two “pages”
for each cut (you will need two sheets for each page). Cut “pages”
about 10 inches apart (this will give the extra sewing room you
need to end up with an 8-1/2x10" page). Cut 8 pages (since
it’s folded in half, you’ll really have 16 pages).
Drawing
the pictures: I started by tracing all the pictures on
the pages with the fabric markers. You just put your regular 8-1/2x11
page behind the first piece of pellum and you can see thru to
trace it. I found pictures online and just traced them. (Because
of copyrights, I didn’t show the pictures I traced. However,
it is pretty easy to find simple pictures online, in clipart books
or coloring books, to trace, or you could draw them yourself).
Make sure to leave 1-2 inches on the left (or right) of each page
so you can sew them together at the end! (for pages 1,3,5,7—leave
a space on left; for 2,4,6,8 leave space on right).
Tips
for making it look great! If you want it to look good,
I suggest tracing over typed words instead of writing them freehand
(even if you have to move them around under the pellum to look
right). Do whatever you want to make it look good, but remember
you can’t erase at all! For lighter colors (like yellow
for skin) I used pencil first to outline the picture and then
the markers. (you can’t erase pencil on pellum either!)
Let the pages “dry” a little before moving them or
stacking them.
Getting
it to last: I also suggest sewing everything as “sturdily”
as possible. Once the book is made, it’s nearly impossible
to go back and “fix” anything that wasn’t made
right. So if you want years of use out of it, sew things twice
or do other things to make it sturdy for a child to use.
PAGE
1: I LOVE TO SEE THE TEMPLE
(I wrote “I LOVE TO SEE THE TEMPLE” on top, traced
a picture of a temple, and drew the flowers on the bottom)
1. Cut out 5 different colored felt flowers (red, yellow,
blue, pink, purple)
2. Cut a small slit in each for the button to go through (not
too big!)
3. Sew white buttons onto the TWO pellum pages together (by
hand or machine) where the flowers are.
4. Attach the felt flowers to the buttons. |

PAGE
2: LIFT UP YOUR VOICE AND SING!
(I had the music staff on top and traced a picture of a
girl singing on the bottom)
1. Cut out 6 pellum circles for the 3 “notes”
that will slide.
2.
Draw different colored notes for each.
3. Cut
a slit on each side next to the note.
4.
Slide the yarn through the 2 slits of each note, making
sure the yarn doesn’t cover the note.
|
|
5. Cut small
slits through the 2 pages of pellum for the yarn (1st, 3rd, 5th
lines of staff)
6. Slide
yarn ends thru to back side of pellum. Sew on with zigzag stitch
while tightening yarn length. Then glue the yarn to the back side.
PAGE
3: THE TREE OF LIFE
(I traced a picture of a tree, drew 5 pear-like white fruits,
and the “iron rod” at the side saying “Hold
to the Rod” underneath.)
1.
Cut out 10 small pear-shaped “fruits”.
2.
Color 5 of the fruits white or yellow.
3.
Sew (or hammer press) on one side of snap to 2 pellum fruit
pieces.
4.
Sew (or hammer press) on other side of snap to 2 pellum
pages on the tree. |
|
PAGE
4: NOAH’S ARK
(On top I wrote “NOAH’S ARK” and had the
top of the ark with a few animals drawn, a bird in the sky,
and a rainbow)
1.
Cut red felt “boat” and 1 or 2 pellum pieces
to go under “boat” (to make sturdy)
2. Sew zipper onto the boat and pellum pieces together (I
didn’t cut any holes in felt---just sewed zipper on
back and cut a hole afterward to get to the zipper on the
front)
3. Sew boat onto the 2 pages of pellum picture using a line
stitch and zigzag stitch.
4. Put little animals inside the pouch. |
|
|
PAGE
5: PIONEERS
(I wrote “Faith in Every Footstep”
and “PIONEER” and traced a handcart and pioneer
woman on the bottom)
1.
Cut 4 of the shoe part that holds the shoelace. Color it
a lighter color than the shoe.
2. Slit 3 holes on each side of 2 pellum shoe-part pieces.
3. Weave shoelace through the 2 sides of shoe pieces.
4. Cut shoelace extra off (leaving about 3 inches in back)
5. Cut slits on each side of 2 pages of pellum where |
|
shoelace can
go thru to back but still be covered by the shoe pieces you will
sew on.
6. Sew on the two shoe pieces on each side of shoe, making sure
to sew over where the shoelace pieces go thru to the back.
7. Glue the shoelace pieces onto the back side.
|
PAGE
6: PAY YOUR TITHING
(I traced a child holding up coin # 1 and a piggy bank on
the side)
1.
Cut out 20 circles of pellum for the coins.
2. Color
and number the coins on 10 pieces.
3.
Sew on Velcro to 2 pieces of pellum for |
|
each coin.
4. Sew on Velcro to 2 pages of pellum on picture.
5. Re-color where you sewed or added Velcro if needed (to see #s
on both coins & the page underneath)

PAGE
7: TIME TO PRAY CLOCK
(I wrote “TIME TO PRAY” on the bottom and traced
a picture of a boy and girl praying)
1.
Cut clock hands out of pellum and cardboard
2. Color
pellum hands.
3.
Poke hole in pellum and cardboard hands with pin. Widen
to make sure brad fits through and can twirl around.
4. Glue
pellum hands to cardboard hands. Let dry overnight.
5. Cut
cardboard circle for behind the clock.
|
|
|
6. Poke hole
in 2pages of pellum for center of clock. Poke hole in center of
cardboard circle for behind clock. Make sure not to “twirl”
the hole, but rather keep it as a slit so the brad won’t
“twirl” around on the clock base.
7. Glue cardboard
circle behind 2 pages of pellum. Let dry overnight.
8. Put brad
through clock hands and clock and fold out fasteners on the back
side. \
PAGE
8: CTR (Choose The Right) COLORING
1. Cut
out a square piece of felt (I used purple) and the same
size piece of pellum
2.
Sew square of felt onto 2 pages of pellum using a zigzag
stitch along the right, left and bottom sides of the square.
Don’t sew top as it should be a “pocket”
for the notebook and pencil/crayon.
3.
Sew a line down to separate pencil and notebook pockets.
|
|
FINISHING
UP
Pages:
1.
Sew zig zag stitch around top, side, and bottom of each
2 pages of pellum for border.
2.
Sew pages 1 & 2, 3 & 4, 5 & 6, 7 & 8 together
around top, side, and bottom. (you will now have 4 thick
“pages”)
3. Trim
edges as needed. Trim inside edges of all pages together
to make even.
4. Sew 2 of the 4 pages together on the inside binding using
a zigzag stitch (be careful and go slow--it’s thick!).
sew the other 2 together. Then sew the final 2 really thick
pieces together so all the pages form a book.
Cutting
Fabric Cover:
5. Make cover out of scrap or purchased material. Cut 2
pieces a bit larger than both the book pages. If your f

inished page
sizes are 8 x 10" or 8 x 20" for a double page spread,
then you'll need 2 pieces of fabric 10 x 22". Cut 1 long pieces
for handles 3 x 24". Cut one smaller piece for Velcro flap
to close cover - 4 x 6".
Sewing Closure Flap
6. Take the smallest piece (for the Velcro closeure flap), fold
in in half right sides together, so you have a piece 2 x 6".
Sew around three sides leaving one of the short sides open - turn
so right side is showing. Sew a piece of Velcro on the closed short
end. The opposite raw edge will be sewn into the cover.
Sewing
Handles
7. Fold handle right sides together (1-1/2 x 24"), and press.
Sew along outside raw edge (24") using a 1/4" seam allowance.
Turn fabric to right side (creating a tube). Find the center of
the tube and cut in half (1 x 12"), press.
Sewing
Cover
8. Place one piece of cover fabric, right sides up on your work
surface. Determine where along the two 10" edges you want
the handles to go. The raw edge of the cover fabric and the raw
edge of the handles should meet, and the handles should curve
intoward the center of the cover fabric.
9. Find the
middle of the right side of quiet book cover. Lay closure flap
- raw edge to raw edge of cover fabric - flap should lay towards
middle of the cover fabric. Pin in place.
10. Place
the second piece of cover fabric on top of the first piece and
handles so the wrong side of the fabric is facing up. Pin in place.
11. Sew along
right, left and top edges using a 1/2" seam allowance. Backstitch
a few times over the handles and closure flap areas. Leave the
bottom open. Turn fabric to right side, making sure handles and
closure flaps are secure and going the correct direction. Press.
12. Lay cover
out on work surface so closure flap is on the right and the Velcro
strip is facing up. Fold cover in half, bringing the left side
over to the right side. Mark where the opposite piece of Velcro
should go on quiet book cover. Sew in place - but only through
outside piece of cover fabric, not the inside piece.
13. Fold quiet book cover in half again, so handles meet. Place
two pins - one at the top and one at the bottom of the fold to
show where the pages should be sewn into the book. Sew a line
of stitching from the top pin to the bottom pin.
14. Cut out 2 rectangular pieces of cardboard slighly smaller
than the front and the back cover "pockets" to put inside
each side for added stablitiy. You'll want each piece to be about
1/2" narrower than the pocket to accommedate the quietbook
pages and allow room to secure them to the cover.
15. Turn the bottom raw edges in 1/2" and top stitch the
bottom of the cover together.
16. Lay cover out on work surface with the inside facing up, closure
flap to your right. Line up pages with the center line of stitching
on the cover, leaving equal amounts of cover fabric showing above
and below the pages. Secure with pins if needed. Very slowly (go
slowly because of the thickness and consider using a heavy duty
needle in your machine), using a ziggag stitch, secure the quietbook
pages to the cover - make sure you aren't sewing over the cardboard.
If your machine will allow, do this atleast twice for added durablity.
13. You’re all done---CONGRATULATIONS and ENJOY!!!
