Independence day always brings... a wave of stars and stripes decorating everything from flag poles to table cloths to clothes. Crafty Chic has two simple, fun crafts that you and your kids will love making together. Finger-paint your very own flag T-shirts, create a simple T-shirt dress or combine the two for the ultimate patriotic outfit. We know you'll love these 4th of July crafts as much as we do.

Patriotic Fingerprint T-shirts

      What You'll Need:
Pre-washed T-shirt (sample shirts done on gray)
cardboard
Red, blue & iridescent white fabric paint paper towels
ruler newspaper
pencil container for paint (old frosting lids work great!)
cardboard (a piece big enough to fit inside the T-shirt)

    Step by Step:

(1) Put cardboard on the inside of the T-shirt so the paint does not bleed through to the back of the shirt.

(2) Place shirt/cardboard on a flat surface. Use newspaper to protect your flat surface from paint.

(3) Draw a flag pattern with a pencil on the shirt. Use a ruler to mark out the following:

The entire flag for a child's shirt is 9 inches across by 5 1/2 inches high.
-The field of blue is 4 1/4 inches across by 3 1/4 inches high.
-Each stripe is 1/2 inch wide.
-There are 7 short stripes and 6 long stripes.

(4) Now you are ready to paint.

Crafty Chic Note: Older children can do their own fingerprints. Younger children will need you to guide their finger.

(5) Start with the red stripes and fill in the top short stripe. Then with red, fill in every other stripe. Watch carefully, it is easy to fill in the wrong stripe.

(6) After this dries, fill the rest of the stripes in with iridescent white fingerprints.

(7) After a few more minutes of drying time, fill in the field of blue.

(8) When the blue is completely dried, add a few stars‚ with the iridescent white again. When you are through, you will have a completely original flag T-shirt.

Note- If your child becomes tired of fingerprinting, either stop for a while and start again or finish it yourself with your little finger.

T-shirt Dresses

This is a fast, fun, inexpensive and easy summer dress you can make into almost any theme.

      What You'll Need:
sewing machine matching fabric (about 1 yard for little girls and slightly more for older girls)
scissors matching thread
T-shirt

    Step by Step:
FIGURE A

(1) Choose fabric and a T-shirt in a coordinating color. (SEE FIGURE A)

Crafty Chic Note: you'll want to wash the fabric and the T-shirt before using and iron them smooth.

(2) Have your child try on the T-shirt and mark where it hits the belly button. Remove the shirt and cut the T-shirt straight across. (SEE FIGURE B)

FIGURE B
(3) Fold the yard of fabric in half so that the selvage edges are together. The selvage is the clean edge, opposed to the cut edge.

(4) Cut the yard into two pieces at the fold.

(5) Place the fabric with right sides together and sew up each short side to form the skirt.

(6) Find the center back and center front of the shirt and the skirt and mark with pins. Sew a basting/gathering stitch at top of the skirt, the waist.

(7) With the right side of the fabric facing the right side of the shirt, match the front, back and sides together and pin.

(8) Gather and pin as you go to make the waist of the dress. Baste the fabric to the shirt. (SEE FIGURE C)

FIGURE C

(9) After removing the pins, sew a regular straight stitch over the baste stitch to connect the shirt and skirt.

(10) Try the dress on your little girl to decide where you want the hem to fall. Pin and sew. The dress will have a more finished look if the hem is folded under twice to cover the selvage edge.

(11) Now you have the finished project -- a cute, summery favorite that's easy to make as it is to wear. (SEE FIGURE D)

Other Ideas

To make the dress even more unique, try appliquéing a figure cut from the fabric or other shapes to the front of the T-shirt. This is a great dress to make for a theme or holiday. Some ideas are cat dresses, cow dresses, fish dresses, 4th of July dresses, tea party dresses and even shoe dresses. With the wide variety of fabrics out there you can have lots of fun being creative with your little girl‚s summer wardrobe.

To make a T-shirt dress for bigger girls you will need about 1 yard and 1/2 or 2 yards. To get the correct length, you will need to fold the fabric in half with the cut edges together instead of the selveges. Sew up the long sides to make the skirt.

This also a great summer dress for adults as well.
Perfect for a lightwieght maternity dress too. You will need 3 to 4 yards depending on how full you will want the skirt
