Girls Night Out:
Fun activities you can do with your girlfriends

Laurie Kuslansky said it best:

“Laugh and the world laughs with you. Cry and you cry with your girlfriends.”

As women, we need time with other women to just be women. We need time to talk about our hair and skin, our children, our spouse, the big sale we hit last week and the new pair of shoes we are planning to buy this week. We want to giggle, cry, share and roll on the floor with laughter. Time spent with the girls seems to give us the energy we need to live with the boys.

Getting Together With the Girls

Whether you go out for a night on the town or gather in one woman's family room, Girls Night Out is a favorite of many women.

Girls Night Out doesn't have to be girlfriends. It could mean mothers and daughters. Young Women from North Ogden 7th Ward, North Ogden Utah Stake, USA., and Haiwatha Branch, Topeka Kansas Stake, USA., said they enjoyed dinner and a movie, talking, baking, doing hair, having dinner, shopping, bowling, and scrapbooking with their mothers.

No matter who your girls are, the important part of a Girls Night is the conversation that takes place. We need other women in our lives, and spending one night with just the girls every once in a while will reinforce our knowledge of our divinity and special calling as women. As Sister Chieko N. Okazaki said in the 1991 General Relief Society meeting,

“Sisterhood [is] the bonding among women on both personal and public levels, from simple friendships to massive organizations. In this sense Mormon women have a complex and vital heritage of sisterhood."

Girls Night Out Crafts

Decorated Paper Boxes

These boxes are a fun Girls Night Out craft because they are quick and easy to make. That means you can spend time talking and laughing while you work. Part of the fun with the project is the trip to the craft store to choose complementary paper patterns. It's the paper that determines the look of the box. Choose bright and playful paper for a child's room or rich and elegant paper for a living room or bedroom. You can even choose seasonal patterns for a holiday look. If you are making them to give away, you can fill them with potpourri or candies for a special treat.

WHAT YOU'LL NEED
• Paper Mache Box
• Patterned paper
• Mod Podge® Matte Decoupage Medium
• Scissors
• Accessories as desired

STEP BY STEP

(1) Choose one pattern of paper for the base of the box, one for the top of the box and one for the sides of the lid.

(2) Using the box as a pattern, cut a strip of paper for the side of the box, a thin strip of paper for the lid sides, and a piece for the top of the box. You might want to allow a little extra paper to turn under the edges at both the top and bottom of the box and lid.

(3) With a large brush, apply thin coat of Mod Podge to the sides of the box. Place paper on surface. Use your fingers to press the paper into place and turn excess over the edges of the box.

(4) With large flat brush, coat paper with Mod Podge Medium, and smooth out any bubbles. Let dry.

(5) Repeat process for the top and sides of the lid. After the paper is dry, you can apply any additional accessories to the top of the box such as dried flowers, buttons, or glitter. To give as a gift, fill with potpourri, candies, or whatever. Makes a great visiting teaching gift.

Girls Night Out Ideas
Going Out

Paint Pottery
Express your creativity through painting pottery. Just about every town has a pottery store that lets you come in and create a work or art on something useful like a plate or mug. It's a fun time to talk while expressing your individuality. If you don't have a pottery shop nearby, purchase blank pottery items from a local craft store and paint your items at home.

Picnic in the Park
Load up the picnic basket and gather a blanket and have a picnic in a park or canyon.

Play Ball
Attend the local college or high school ball games, or get in the action yourself. Get a group together to play a couple of innings of softball or kick around the soccer ball. Ice skating, shooting hoops, or even good old fashion tag, could be a fun stress reliever and exercise idea for your group.

Visit a Museum
Many communities host art, history, science, and natural history museums that you could visit for a nominal fee. (Note, you will probably have to make a day trip as most museum are closed after regular business hours.)

Shop till You Drop
Shopping is the epitome of Girls Night Out. Window shop with your friends at a mall or downtown shops. For an indoor twist, gather around the computer and go shopping online with your girlfriends.

Take in a Show
Attend a play or musical at a local theater. Maybe catch dinner before the show or dessert afterwards.

Staying In

"Bet'cha Didn't Know" Night
Have a lot of embarrassing unrelated stories that will get a lot of laughs from girls, but you would never in a million years tell a guy? Have everyone write down five to ten "Bet'cha Didn't Knows," and put them in a jar. Everyone pulls out a slip and tries to guess who it is. (PS Not all have to be embarrassing stories.)

Book Club
Everyone reads the same book over a few weeks and gathers regularly to discuss their thoughts, etc.
> Learn how to start your own book club
> Make yummy book club treats

Book Swap
Finished a good book that you'd love your girlfriends to read? Have everyone bring their favorite book (make sure your name is in the book) and swap with your friends. Come back in a month and swap again.

Card Making
This is a great alternative to having a scrapbook party. Some people don't want to scrapbook but like the creativity that goes into it. Everyone gives cards, so why not spend the night creating a few or a set of handmade cards to give away. You could even swap cards at the end of the evening.

Cookie Exchange
Have everyone make their favorite cookies, write up the recipe and prepare a bag of cookies to give to everyone invited to the party. At the end of the night, everyone leaves with several bags of yummy cookies and several yummy recipes.

Craft it
Make a craft -- paint a flower pot, plant an herb garden, make scented soap and candles.
>Search Crafty Chic for fun ideas

Face Mask/Chick Flick Night
What are two thing men will never admit to doing but wish they could without getting made fun of? That's right -- face masks and chick flicks. On this night without the fellas, pull out both and have fun watching Sandra Bullock and Julia Roberts find love while opening your pores and exfoliating.

Magazine Beauty Tip Night
Pull out your Vogue and Cosmo-it's beauty tip time. Every women's magazine has tons of them, so use this time to try some of them out. Have everyone bring their favorite magazine and any beauty supplies that are applicable (lotions, make-up, face masks, etc.)

Make Dinner
Have everyone come over and make dinner together. Each person could bring an ingredient.

Make Your Own Spa Night
Can't afford to flip the bill for your girlfriends to spend the day in a spa? Pamper yourself with homemade facial masks, exfoliating scrubs, and split-end treatments. Don't feel like whipping up your own products? Have each person bring their favorite store-bought facial supplies to share and try.
>Contact your local Mary Kay consultant to schedule a free facial
>Spa Recipe Finder, from iVillage

Manicures/Pedicures/Massages
Invite someone who knows how to do one of these activities and pamper each other as you learn something new. Who couldn't use the time to relax.

Musical Night
It is almost a general rule that guys don't like musicals and girls do.* So, go to the video store and have a Shirley Jones-a-thon or a Roger & Hammerstein-a-thon with your girlfriends.

*This isn't always the case, but we've found it to be.

Organize Night
Whether it's a junk drawer or a shoe box of photos, bring something that you want to organize (and even something you would like help in organizing) and spend the night cleaning up. You could even bring magazine tips on organizing.
> Learn more about organizing your house
> Learn more about organizing your closet

Pajama Party
Everyone comes over in the PJs. Eat junk and watch rubbish. Do each others hair and nails. Just like the old days. (Sleeping over not required.)

Pot Luck it
Have a pot luck dinner asking each girlfriend to bring an item. You could even have a theme like Hawaiian, Mexican, Italian, Breakfast, Comfort Foods, etc.
> Search Recipe Chic for fun ideas

Play Board Games
Pull out your favorite board games and make it a night of competition, chatting, and fun.

Project Party
Who says you have to all be doing the same thing? Have everyone bring their own project whether it be scrapbooking, quilting, knitting, or whatever. You get the chance to finish your project and chat too.

Recipe Exchange
Similar to the cookie exchange, but you can change the theme (i.e., muffins, chip dip, brownies, etc.) Exchange the recipes and eat the treats at the party.

Scrapbooking
Who has time to scrapbook when men or children are around? Have everyone being their supplies and spend the night chatting and scrapping. You'll be surprised how much you can get done with the inspiration you get from others. Plus, you can swap supplies, etc. and get to try new products and ideas.

Serenade Each Other
Play piano, guitar, or any instrument and sing. You don't have to be talented to have a good time. Belt out musical scores like Saturday's Warrior and other Mormon favorites.

Support Your Team
Make fun finger foods, gather around the TV and cheer on your favorite teams. (Yes, NCA Dance and Cheer Competitions on ESPN are sports!)

The author says her favorite Girls Night Out activity is a simple night in with a good chick flick, pizza, a movie, and ice cream sundaes. There would be lots of talking, maybe a game of Truth or Truth, and perhaps some chocolate.
